NFPA 460: Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports

The new NFPA® 460, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services at Airports, presents the minimum requirements for ARFF services. The standard also offers criteria by which an authority having jurisdiction maintains proficiency and establishes test procedures for evaluating the foam firefighting equipment installed on ARFF vehicles. As part of the NFPA Emergency Response and Responder Safety Document Consolidation Plan, this first-time edition combines NFPA 403, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Services at Airports; NFPA 405, Standard for the Recurring Proficiency of Airport Fire Fighters; and NFPA 412, Standard for Evaluating Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Foam Equipment.
Significant changes to consolidated requirements in the 2024 edition of NFPA 460 include:
- Revisions to several definitions for clarification and to reflect current use and practices, as well as provide guidance and clarification on the positioning of ARFF vehicles at air shows
- Edits to the recurrent training requirements to better align with initial training requirements and to ensure individuals are able to demonstrate their skills
- Revised portion of NFPA 460 that was previously NFPA 412 to clarify the nature of the testing. There had been confusion regarding previous editions of NFPA 412, where it had been perceived as a foam testing standard when it was testing the foam production capabilities of ARFF apparatus built to NFPA 414, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting Vehicles, which is now NFPA 1900, Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicles, Automotive Fire Apparatus, Wildland Fire Apparatus, and Automotive Ambulances. The purpose of the test results being measured as part of the NFPA 412 content in NFPA 460 is to ensure that the ARFF vehicle is operating as designed regarding the production of foam
- Replacement of the term halogenated agents with clean agents to reflect current use and practice
