The inaugural edition of NFPA 1550 consolidates three standards into one.
NFPA 1550, Standard for Emergency Responder Health and Safety, integrates NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellness Program; NFPA 1521, Standard for Fire Department Safety Officer Professional Qualifications; and NFPA 1561, Standard on Emergency Services Incident Management System and Command Safety, into a single standard that addresses occupational safety and health programs for fire departments, fire rescue, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation, special operations, and other emergency services.
The 2024 edition includes:
- All duties defined for each position to assure job performance requirements (JPRs) accurately reflect assessments for candidates
- Adjusted JPRs for enhanced relevancy, correctness, and testability
- Removed requirements for power-assisted cots
- Consolidated information on personal protective equipment
- Updates on behavioral health and wellness programs, exposure to potentially traumatic events, and exposure to contaminants
- The recognition of the incident command system
